The Ghosts by Antonia Barber5/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Lucy and Jamie are ecstatic to have an old house and its garden to explore.undeterred by whispers that the place is haunted.īut it is haunted, in a way. And despite the strange circumstances, and the vague mystery surrounding the old man, the offer is good. This comes as a godsend to the family, struggling to hold on after the father's death. He brings good news-the offer of a job for their mother, as caretaker to a country house. On a cold and rainy night in London, a stranger comes to the home of Lucy and Jamie. Today's book is one of the later, one I read as a nine year old, and recently found again: The Ghosts, by Antonia Barber (1969, ages 10 and up).* On the left is the cover I knew as a child, at the bottom is the modern reprint cover that is utterly and completely hideous and enough to turn anyone against the poor book forever. In my Timeslip Tuesday posts, I seem (generally) to have two broad categories of book-those that are recent, and new to me, and those that I read as a child-books that have haunted me ever since. ![]()

Time and Chance by Peter Townsend5/8/2023 ![]() READ: The Queen and Princess Margaret - the big difference between their grandchildren "I have reached this decision entirely alone, and in doing so I have been strengthened by the unfailing support and devotion of Group Captain Townsend." ![]() But mindful of the Church's teachings that Christian marriage is indissoluble, and conscious of my duty to the Commonwealth, I have resolved to put these considerations before others. "I have been aware that, subject to my renouncing my rights of succession, it might have been possible for me to contract a civil marriage. However, Margaret went on to release a statement confirming that she had broken off the engagement, writing: "I would like it to be known that I have decided not to marry Group Captain Peter Townsend. Princess Margaret broke off the engagement in 1955 ![]()

The 2030 spike by colin mason5/8/2023 ![]() The picture he paints is stark, and yet it is not bleak. In this compelling book, and update to The 2030 Spike, Colin Mason explains in clear and irrefutable terms what is going on largely below the surface of our daily or weekly news bulletins. ![]() Taken together, these trends point to a potentially apocalyptic period, if not for the planet itself then certainly for human societies and for humankind. Whether it is the growth of world population, of greenhouse gas concentrations and the accelerating rate of climate change, the running down of oil and natural gas reserves, growing shortages of fresh water for agriculture, industry and domestic use, or the increasing difficulty in controlling epidemic diseases we are facing a mounting global crisis that will peak in less than a generation, around the year 2030. ![]() ![]() Has the future a future? Are we bringing history to an end? Observing any one of several individual but critical trends suggests that, without rapid and positive action, history may have only a very short way to run. ![]()

![]() ![]() The storylines were original, easy to follow, unpredictable, well-paced, and entertaining. It was readily apparent that the evening was likely to be of an increasingly unpleasant nature, more for some than others as most of the guests departed the premises with the coroner. The weather was foul although not as vicious as the contemptuous and imperious attitudes of the female guests. A large envelope stuffed with cash arrived later, which helped to ease the sting as well as adding an extra layer of puzzlement. It was a banner day for the struggling innkeeper as all seven rooms had been reserved, yet when her guests arrived, they all mentioned winning an all-expense paid luxury vacation to her inn, which was a stunning surprise to the innkeeper. This was a quickly paced, wryly humorous, and fun cozy murder mystery featuring a revenge plot in a small-town inn located in the middle of nowhere Idaho. ![]() ![]() I should have known better than to come here. With me here and him there, that means a hundred percent of his common sense isn’t even in the same state as his penis. “Easier to catch him,” said Myrtle, wiggling her eyebrows. And he’s a hottie!” “Myrtle, are you serious? He’s got to be seventy years old,” said Klarinda. ![]()

The friend book sigrid nunez5/8/2023 ![]() From beginning to end, I thought myself engaged with what we now call the personal narrative. The heartbreak inscribed in those final words fills the page to the margin and beyond with the penetrating loneliness-the sheer textured burden of life itself-that all of Sigrid Nunez’s fine writing had been at brilliant pains to keep both within sight and at bay. They don’t always mesh or make a satisfying design, but they are held together by the tone of the narrator’s voice: light, musing, curious, and somehow wonderfully sturdy. When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend. The dog, the suicide, the writing life: These are the three strands of thought and feeling that make up the weave of The Friend. A moving story of love, friendship, grief, healing, and the magical bond between a woman and her dog. ![]() ![]() I don’t know whether or not The Friend is a good novel or even, strictly speaking, if it’s a novel at all - so odd is its construction - but after I’d turned the last page of the book I found myself sorry to be leaving the company of a feeling intelligence that had delighted me and even, on occasion, given joy. ![]()

Battlepug by Mike Norton5/7/2023 ![]() ![]() Those weekly snapshots were published over five years, of course, so you were still in the trenches with the characters. In issue form, readers spend more time with the characters, whereas the webcomic only offered weekly snapshots. The pacing needed to slow down, which felt kind of weird because for a long time Battlepug felt defined by that packed, hectic pace. ![]() When I started writing the issues I realized that I can let things breathe a little more. The webcomic only came out once a week, so I had to pack everything into that one page. ![]() Matt: The print format seems better suited towards pathos and character development. The new series is a different animal, and that’s both exciting and terrifying. Now I’m formatting Battlepug to the standard 20-page issue. With the webcomic I could experiment and make up the rules. But I wanted to see how it would work as a comic book, because that’s where background is and I’ve never written for that format before. I published Battlepug as a webcomic because it was easier to put it online than print it, I could put it up the day I finished drawing it. Mike Norton: I just wanted to see how it would work. ![]() |
